PAR, PA and Ethnography

I have had a number of e-mails (to me personally) saying that this is broadly a good idea--thanks for that! However, people seem to be a bit reluctant to put their thoughts up on the blog. It is a bit like white paper syndrom I think; all that space to fill...

...So I thought I would put down a few thoughts just to get the ball rolling (always with the danger that this will stear the conversation in one direction to the detriment of other directions). Here it goes...

It seems, following Pain (2003) that we can consider Action Research (AR) as research that lies along a continuum, from policy focused work that seeks to influence to work that is ethnographic and which arises from practices (Dorthy Smith (2005) has attempted to address some of the ontological and epistemological issues that reside at this end of the spectrum). More recently, geographers have made the connections between ethnographic work and Participatory Action Research (see Butz 2008 and Hall 2009), but in doing so also seem to conceptualise PAR as ethnography. So I am wondering, do we make a distinction between PAR and AR on the basis of its methodology and what does this decision mean for ethics? Also what migth the important differences be between PAR and Ethnography for reserach ethics?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://parethics.blogspot.com/2009/07/enthusiasm-par-pa-and-ethnography.html' title='Enthusiasm!?! I have been asked to help write a guidance sheet concerning PAR ethics issues and it seemed only appropriate to approach this in a participatory kind of way. So PLEASE add your comments and hopefully we can create some guidance that seeks to build on the trust relationships that can develop within this type of work.
